Support by Thai Family Visa (Non-Immigrant O) Requirements

NON-O Support by Thai Family requirements and document list

Requirements and documents for the Non-Immigrant O visa supported by a Thai family (Dependent Family Visa), for both forms of support, covering both a change of visa type inside Thailand (In-Country Conversion) and a new application through the e-Visa system from abroad (Before Arrival).

Form 1: A Thai child wishes to support and care for foreign parents

For a foreign father or mother whose child is Thai and who wishes to move to Thailand to live with the family, supported by the Thai child.

Key requirements
  • Applicant's age: the foreign father or mother must be 50 years of age or older on the filing date.
  • Financial criteria: financial evidence of the Thai child, such as an employment certificate, tax documents and other relevant certificates showing the ability to care for the foreign parents.
📋 Required documents (Checklist)
  • Application form: TM.86/TM.87 (for a change of visa within Thailand) or the e-Visa online form (for applications from abroad)
  • Passport: original with copy (valid for at least 6 more months)
  • Birth certificate of the Thai child: original, to prove the parent-child blood relationship
  • Documents of the Thai child: copy of the Thai ID card and house registration
  • Financial evidence: the child's employment certificate, salary slips and income documents of the Thai child
  • Residence and de facto evidence: residence notification (TM.30), home map, and colour photos of the foreign parents with the Thai child inside and in front of the home (4-6 photos)
  • Medical certificate: original from a medical facility in Thailand (only when changing visa type in Thailand)

Form 2: A Thai father or Thai mother wishes to support and care for a foreign child

For foreign children or young people whose father or mother is Thai and who wish to live, grow up or study in Thailand under the care of their Thai family.

Key requirements
  • Applicant's age and status: the foreign child must be no older than 20 and unmarried.
  • Legitimacy (where the father is Thai):
    • If the mother is Thai, the right is complete by blood immediately.
    • If the father is Thai but did not register his marriage with the foreign mother, he must have a 'child legitimation registration certificate (KR.11)' or a Thai court order confirming that he is the legal father before he can apply to support his foreign child.
  • Financial criteria: in some cases exempt from the 400,000 THB deposit requirement, but evidence of stable support and education must be shown instead.
📋 Required documents
  • Application form: TM.86/TM.87 (change within Thailand) or the e-Visa application form (applications from abroad)
  • Passport of the foreign child: original with copy
  • Birth certificate of the foreign child: original (if issued abroad, it must be translated into Thai or English and legalized by the embassy)
  • Documents confirming the Thai father's/mother's legal rights: child legitimation registration (KR.11), marriage certificate (KR.3) and marriage registration (KR.2), or a Thai court order
  • Documents of the Thai father or mother: copy of the ID card and Thai house registration
  • Education evidence (if any): student certificate from a school or educational institution in Thailand
  • Residence and de facto evidence: residence notification receipt (TM.30), home map, and family photos together at home showing you genuinely live there

💡 Cautions and advice from ETHAIVISA

Travelling abroad: once either of these two types of family support visa (Non-O) has been approved, if you wish to leave Thailand while the visa is still valid, you must obtain a Re-Entry Permit (TM.8) every time. Otherwise, the visa will be terminated immediately (Void).
Applying in Thailand: on the appointment day at the Immigration Office, all family members involved in the case must appear together to give statements to the officer. There is a consideration period of about 30 days, during which your home may be randomly inspected in line with security regulations.

Support by Thai Family Visa FAQ

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the Non-O visa supported by a Thai family

The foreign father or mother applying must be at least 50 years old on the date of application, and must have a child of Thai nationality who applies to take on their care and support.

No. If the foreign parent is under 50, they do not qualify for the “Thai child supporting a foreign parent” category. However, if the parent is the one raising and supporting a Thai child (under 20 years of age), they must apply under the “Thai Child Support Visa” category instead, which has different criteria.

You must show a deposit in a Thai bank account (a sole account in the foreigner’s name) of no less than 800,000 THB, or proof of income/pension of no less than 65,000 THB per month transferred from abroad.

For the first application to change to a 90-day Non-O visa, the full 800,000 THB must be shown in the account on the day you apply. (The 2-month seasoning requirement does not yet apply, but it will be enforced when you apply for your next annual extension.)

You must request a registrar-certified copy of the birth certificate (TR.1/1) at the district office, or use a DNA test result to confirm the blood relationship together with civil registration documents instead.

The foreign child applying must be no older than 20 years of age and must be unmarried.

Yes, but the Thai father must first register the legitimation of the child (KR.11) or obtain a Thai court order confirming his legal paternity. If his name only appears on a foreign birth certificate without any document certifying his rights, the application cannot be submitted.

It is easier than when the father is Thai, because maternity is automatically established once the mother is named on the birth certificate. You can simply submit the child’s translated and certified birth certificate together with the Thai mother’s house registration.

In many immigration areas, if the Thai father or mother is the one supporting the foreign child, they are exempt from the 400,000 THB deposit requirement. Instead, they must show evidence of stability, such as their residence, the child’s schooling in Thailand, or the Thai parent’s employment, to confirm their ability to support the child.

No. Once the child turns 20, they are legally an adult and their right to stay under the child support visa ends. The foreign child must switch to another visa type, such as a work visa (Non-B) or a student visa (Non-ED).

Yes. You submit form TM.86 or TM.87 at the Immigration Bureau to change to a 90-day Non-O visa, provided that your current visa has no fewer than 15 days remaining.

Yes, everyone must attend together. Whether the applicant is a foreign parent or a foreign child, the Thai family member acting as sponsor must have their face scanned and sign the confirmation documents in front of the immigration officer.

Immigration will stamp a temporary permission and set an “Under Consideration” appointment date approximately 30 days later, while the case is sent to a committee to verify the relationship and supporting documents.

Spot inspections are very likely. Local immigration officers may visit your home using the map provided to check that the family genuinely lives together and supports one another in practice, and that the documents are not fabricated in order to obtain a visa.

Colour photos printed on A4 paper are required, including: a photo together in front of the house with the house number clearly visible, photos together in the living room and in the bedroom, and photos of activities at home, 4-6 photos in total, as tangible evidence.

Yes. You apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ online Thailand e-Visa system, selecting the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the country where you reside.

You will be granted an initial stay of 90 days from the date you pass through Thai immigration. Once in Thailand, you can extend it on an annual basis at immigration during the final 30 days before your visa expires.

When applying to a Royal Thai Embassy, documents in Thai or English can be uploaded to the system directly without translation.

It must be translated into Thai or English and legalised (Legalization) by that country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Thai Embassy before it can be used as a supporting document.

No, it is exempt. Neither form of this Non-O family visa carries a legal requirement for health insurance with 3 million THB coverage, unlike some retirement visa categories (such as Non-OA).

Under current procedures, Indian nationals cannot apply through a fast-track channel or have an agent submit on their behalf. They must appear in person and queue normally at the Lak Si immigration office only (separate from Chaeng Watthana). However, ETHAIVISA can help you prepare your document file and check your KR.11 in advance so everything is exactly right.

It is absolutely essential. The owner of the house where the family lives together must file the TM.30 notification for the foreign applicant within 24 hours of their arrival. Without this evidence, immigration will not accept the visa application under any circumstances.

Yes. If a foreign national holding this family Non-O visa (such as a foreign parent, or a foreign child old enough to work) is hired by a company, the visa can serve as the basis for applying for a Work Permit with the Department of Employment, in full compliance with labour law.

The visa will become void immediately if you do not apply for a Re-Entry Permit (TM.8) before leaving the country. So never forget to obtain a Re-Entry Permit every time before you fly.

Because immigration screens family cases very strictly to prevent sham applications, and there are legal blind spots (such as KR.11 or foreign legalised documents). Our senior consultants will review your documents, plan your finances, manage the timeline and send staff to support you at immigration, so that your family can live together happily and lawfully in Thailand.
