Non-O-X Key Benefits

The 4 Best Advantages of the 10-Year Non-Immigrant O-X Retirement Visa

What makes this visa type outstanding and great value for expat foreigners

1. Stay a full 10 years — apply once for long-lasting coverage

You get the right to stay in Thailand for up to 10 full years (Immigration first stamps 5 years in one go, and you can extend for a second 5 years in Thailand), so you avoid the hassle of going to Immigration every year as with regular Non-O or Non-O-A retirement visas.

2. A Multiple-Entry visa — travel freely with no Re-entry needed

The Non-O-X is itself a Multiple-Entry visa. Throughout the first 5 years you can fly in and out of Thailand whenever you like without paying for or queuing to get a Re-entry Permit at the airport or Immigration before departure.

3. Special right to do "Volunteer" work legally

This is a legal advantage other retirement visas do not have! Retirement visas normally prohibit work entirely, but Non-O-X holders are allowed by the Thai government to do social or "volunteer" work with registered organizations or foundations under the Department of Employment criteria, without changing visa type.

4. Added benefits for buying assets and family rights

Non-O-X holders enjoy high credibility with Thai authorities, making long-term transactions easier, such as buying a car or purchasing a condominium. Spouses and children (under 20) can also apply for Non-O-X dependent visas to live and attend international schools in Thailand together as a family package.

Non-O-X 10-Year Visa Requirements

Requirements and Documents for Non-O-X (Long Stay 10 Years)

For the Non-Immigrant O-X (Long Stay 10 Years) visa, the law clearly states: "The first application must be made from abroad via Thai E-Visa only. You cannot fly in and change your visa type inside Thailand, but after the first 5 years in Thailand you can apply for the second 5-year extension at an Immigration office in Thailand."

  • Age: must be 50 years of age or older on the application date
  • Nationality (very important): only holders of passports from these 14 countries may apply — Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada and the United States (USA)
  • Financial criteria (choose one):
    1. Deposit: a fixed or savings deposit of at least 3,000,000 THB in a bank located in Thailand
    2. Deposit plus income: a deposit of at least 1.8 million THB in a Thai bank and an annual pension of at least 1.2 million THB (after entering Thailand, the Thai account must reach 3 million THB within 1 year)

Balance rule: keep 3 million THB in the Thai account for at least the first year; after that, withdrawals for spending in Thailand are allowed, but the balance must never fall below 1,500,000 THB

  • Mandatory health insurance: outpatient (OPD) coverage of at least 40,000 THB/year and inpatient (IPD) coverage of at least 400,000 THB/year

  1. Passport: valid for at least 18 months
  2. Application form and 4x6 cm color photo with a white background
  3. Applicant's short CV / Resume / Biography
  4. Financial evidence: letter from a bank in Thailand and statements showing the required deposit (3 million, or 1.8 million + pension)
  5. Police Clearance: from the home country (not older than 3 months and legalized by Notary Public/Apostille)
  6. Health Insurance Certificate from an insurer listed on longstay.tgia.org
    • Inpatient (IPD): coverage of at least 400,000 THB per year
    • Outpatient (OPD): coverage of at least 40,000 THB per year

After the first 5 years, to stay for the second 5 years (completing the 10-year right), prepare the following documents for Immigration in Thailand

  1. Application for extension of stay (TM.7) with the 1,900 THB fee
  2. Original passport with a copy of the previous Non-O-X visa and TM.30 residence notification
  3. Past Thai bank statements: proving the balance rule (3 million for the full first year and not below 1.5 million THB in later years)
  4. Updated health insurance policy: showing OPD 40k / IPD 400k coverage for another 5 years
  5. Updated medical certificate and criminal record (some immigration offices may request them for security screening)

Non-O-X 10-Year Long Stay Visa FAQ

Frequently asked questions: first-time work permit application, expert level (general business)

The Non-O-X visa is a 10-year long-stay retirement visa (granted as 5 years + 5 years). The difference is that a standard Non-O must be extended every year, whereas the Non-O-X is applied for once and grants Multiple-Entry rights covering a full 5 years from the first round, without frequent visits to immigration. Holders may also do volunteer work and find it easier to buy a car or a condo in Thailand.

The fee for applying from abroad is 400 USD (approximately 14,000 THB, depending on the exchange rate in each country) for the first 5-year Multi-Entry period.

It is how the entitlement is structured by law. The government first grants a full 5 years. Once you have stayed in Thailand for the first 5 years, you can apply at immigration in Thailand for a second extension of stay for another 5 years, giving a total entitlement of no more than 10 years.

No. The law clearly states that applicants must hold a passport from one of the 14 designated countries only (major European countries, the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia). Other nationalities are not eligible to apply.

No. Regular employment or running a business for income remains strictly prohibited on all types of retirement visa. However, a special exception for the Non-O-X is that holders may work as volunteers in roles listed by the Department of Employment without having to change visa type.

It must be held with a bank located in Thailand only. Unlike some other visas, a foreign bank statement cannot be used. The account must be a savings or fixed deposit account in the applicant's sole name.

There are fairly strict rules on the deposit: • After you receive the visa and enter Thailand, the 3,000,000 THB must remain untouched in your Thai account for a full 1 year, with no withdrawals. • After the first year, you may withdraw funds for expenses, but the account must keep a balance of no less than 1,500,000 THB at all times, and any funds withdrawn must be spent within Thailand only.

When applying online, you can show a deposit of 1.8 million THB in Thailand together with an annual pension certificate of 1.2 million THB. However, there is an additional accumulation requirement: within a full 1 year of entering Thailand, you must top up your Thai account so that the total balance reaches 3,000,000 THB.

No. It must be a savings or fixed deposit account held solely in the name of the principal foreign applicant. Immigration will not consider a joint account.

The Non-O-X follows the original regulations: you must have Thai health insurance covering outpatient care (OPD) of at least 40,000 THB per year and inpatient care (IPD) of at least 400,000 THB per year. This differs from the 3 million THB requirement for the Non-O-A.

We recommend buying health insurance from a Thai insurer participating in the scheme via longstay.tgia.org, as this is the safest option: the system immediately issues a certificate in the exact format the embassy requires. If you use foreign insurance, your insurer must sign the Foreign Insurance Certificate form and the document must go through additional legalization.

It must be obtained from the national police authority of your country of nationality, and the document must be no more than 30-90 days old from its issue date to the date you upload it to the online application system.

Because legal and medical documents issued abroad must always first be authenticated (by Apostille or Notary Public) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country. If you upload the original files without this, officers will reject them immediately.

Yes, it is a mandatory document for the Non-O-X. It should clearly summarise your education, past employment and the position you held before retiring, to present a transparent profile for security screening.

Yes, as usual. Even though it is a 10-year visa, the main provisions of the Immigration Act still require every foreigner staying in Thailand continuously for more than 90 days to report their address every 90 days.

Yes. Your spouse (no age limit) and children (under 20) can apply for a Non-O-X (Dependent) visa through the online system, following the principal applicant.

Your spouse and children must each also show a separate deposit of at least 3,000,000 THB in a Thai bank account. Alternatively, if the principal holds one large deposit, that account must be increased according to the number of family members (e.g. a combined family account holding a fixed balance in the proportion set by immigration). This makes it a dependent visa with very high financial requirements.

No Re-entry Permit is needed at all. Throughout the first 5-year validity of the visa, you can travel in and out of Thailand as many times as you like, and your visa entitlement and permitted stay will certainly not be lost.

You can prepare your bank and health insurance documents and apply for the second extension (TM.7) at an Immigration Bureau office within Thailand, around 30-45 days before expiry, without having to fly back to apply abroad.

Immigration will require a detailed bank statement covering past transactions to check your withdrawal history, specifically whether, after the first year, your balance ever fell below 1.5 million THB. If there was any period when the balance was short, you will no longer meet the visa criteria and the extension will not be granted.

It must be obtained from a bank branch in Thailand and issued on the same day you submit your application at immigration, or no more than 24 hours earlier, so that the figures in the system and in your bank book match in real time.

First obtain a new passport from your country's embassy in Thailand. Then take both the old and new passports to immigration to request a transfer of visa stamp (Transfer Stamp), and the remaining 5-year entitlement will be smoothly transferred to your new passport.

If your balance falls below the threshold, you will immediately no longer qualify for the Non-O-X visa. Immigration will not approve your extension in year 5, and your visa may even be revoked during the year if a random online check of linked bank data is carried out.

If maintaining the 3 million THB deposit for the Non-O-X is a burden, we recommend consulting ETHAIVISA to adjust your plan, either by switching to another premium visa option or to a standard Non-O retirement visa (800,000 THB deposit), which allows much more flexible cash management.

The Non-O-X has the highest deposit requirements of any visa and very complex international legal requirements, from cross-border legalization of police clearance certificates to strict rules on withdrawing funds during the year. A small mistake in financial planning could leave your multi-million-baht deposit frozen for nothing and put you at risk of a visa refusal. The ETHAIVISA team reviews the structure of your legalized documents, coordinates the opening of a Thai bank account and manages the entire E-Visa timeline end to end, turning complex international procedures into a smooth first-time approval, so that you can enjoy 10 secure, high-quality retirement years in Thailand.
